Northlight Studies is an independent educational publication for secondary English teachers, offering articles, free teaching resources, and related materials.

The website does not use accounts, analytics, advertising trackers, or cookies. It does rely on a small number of service providers to deliver the site, display its typefaces, and deliver contact-form messages. This policy describes each of them, along with how Northlight Studies uses Pinterest.

Information Northlight Studies processes

You do not need to create an account or provide personal information to read articles, browse resources, or download free resources. Information is processed only in the situations below.

When you visit the website

A website cannot be delivered without some technical information. When your browser requests a page, the website’s hosting provider, Vercel, processes information such as your IP address, browser and device type, the address of the page requested, the referring page, and the date and time of the request. This information is used to deliver the website, keep it secure and reliable, and diagnose technical problems. Northlight Studies does not use it to identify or profile individual visitors.

Typefaces

The website’s typefaces are provided by Google Fonts. When a page loads, your browser requests the font files from Google’s servers, so Google receives your IP address, technical information about your browser, and the fact that the request came from northlightstudies.com. Northlight Studies uses Google Fonts only to display text, and does not use Google Fonts, or any other Google service on the website, for analytics or advertising.

Site search

Search runs in your browser, using a search index loaded from northlightstudies.com itself. Your search terms are not sent to a search provider, and Northlight Studies does not keep a record of them. When you submit a search or open a search results link, the search terms form part of the page address (for example, /search?q=theme), so, like any page address, they may appear in the hosting provider’s technical request logs.

Your light or dark theme preference

If you use the light/dark theme switch, your choice is saved in your browser’s local storage so the website can remember it on your next visit. The stored value is simply “light” or “dark.” It stays on your device, is not sent to Northlight Studies or anyone else, and is removed when you clear your browser’s data for the site. If you never use the switch, nothing is stored and the website follows your device’s display setting.

When you contact Northlight Studies

The contact form asks for your name, email address, a subject, and your message. When you send it, those details are transmitted to Formspree, the form service that delivers the message to Northlight Studies by email, together with the technical information that accompanies any web request, such as your IP address. Formspree may use this information to filter spam.

If you email hello@northlightstudies.com directly, your email address, your name as it appears in your email, and anything you choose to include in your message are processed by the email providers involved in receiving it.

Information you send is used only to read and respond to your message and to keep a record of the correspondence.

Why information is processed

Personal information is processed where necessary to:

  • deliver, maintain, and secure the website, and understand technical problems with it;
  • display the website’s text as designed;
  • read and respond to messages and requests;
  • comply with legal obligations; and
  • protect Northlight Studies, its website, and its readers from misuse or security threats.

This processing is based on Northlight Studies’ legitimate interests in operating a secure, reliable, and readable website and in responding to people who get in touch, where those interests are not overridden by your rights and interests. Where processing is necessary to comply with a legal obligation, that obligation is the basis.

Northlight Studies does not currently carry out any processing that relies on your consent. If a feature that requires consent is introduced, it will not be activated until you have given that consent, and you will be able to withdraw it at any time.

Cookies and browser storage

northlightstudies.com does not set cookies. It does not use analytics, advertising, or social-media tracking technologies, and it does not include social-media buttons, widgets, or embedded third-party content.

The only information the website stores in your browser is the optional theme preference described above.

If Northlight Studies introduces optional analytics or other non-essential technologies in the future, this policy will be updated before they are used, and any technology that requires consent will not be activated without it.

Pinterest and Northlight Studio Publisher

Northlight Studies uses Pinterest to share its own articles and teaching resources. The website itself does not include Pinterest buttons, widgets, or tracking code.

Northlight Studio Publisher is an internal publishing tool used by Northlight Studies. It uses the Pinterest API only with Northlight Studies’ own Pinterest business account, where it may:

  • create and manage Northlight Studies Pins;
  • read information about Northlight Studies’ own boards and Pins for publishing, verification, and record-keeping; and
  • read performance information that Pinterest provides about Northlight Studies’ own Pins, such as aggregate impressions, saves, and clicks, to understand which content is useful to teachers.

The tool is not offered as a service to other Pinterest users, and it is not designed to access or manage anyone else’s Pinterest account, Pins, or boards. Northlight Studies does not use Pinterest API data to build profiles of Pinterest users, and does not sell Pinterest API data or provide it to data brokers.

Pinterest authentication credentials and API access tokens are not part of the public website and are not made available to visitors.

When you use Pinterest, including viewing or saving a Northlight Studies Pin, Pinterest’s own privacy policy applies.

Service providers and data sharing

Northlight Studies does not sell personal information and does not share it for advertising.

The website relies on the following service providers, which receive information only as needed to provide their services:

  • Vercel hosts and delivers the website and processes the technical request information described above. (Vercel privacy notice)
  • Google Fonts provides the website’s typefaces and receives the technical information your browser sends when fonts load. (Google Fonts privacy information)
  • Formspree receives contact-form submissions and delivers them to Northlight Studies by email. (Formspree privacy policy)
  • Email service providers receive, forward, and store messages sent to hello@northlightstudies.com and messages delivered from the contact form.

Information may also be disclosed where required by law, or where necessary to establish, exercise, or defend legal claims or to protect the security of the website.

International data transfers

Northlight Studies is based in Norway, which is part of the European Economic Area (EEA). Some of the service providers listed above are based in the United States or process information outside the EEA.

Where personal information is transferred outside the EEA, Northlight Studies relies on the safeguards required under applicable data-protection law, such as an adequacy decision (including the EU–U.S. Data Privacy Framework, for providers that participate in it) or standard contractual clauses.

How long information is kept

Personal information is kept only for as long as reasonably necessary for the purpose for which it was collected.

  • Messages and correspondence are kept for as long as needed to respond and to keep a reasonable record of the conversation, and are then deleted. Copies of contact-form submissions may also be retained by Formspree under its own retention practices.
  • Technical request information is retained by the hosting and infrastructure providers under their own retention arrangements.
  • Your theme preference remains in your browser until you clear it.

Information may be kept longer where necessary to meet legal obligations or to resolve disputes.

Your privacy rights

Under the GDPR and other applicable data-protection laws, you may have the right to request access to your personal information, and to ask for it to be corrected, deleted, restricted, or provided to you in a portable format. You may also object to processing based on legitimate interests. Where processing is based on consent, you may withdraw that consent at any time.

To make a request or ask a question about privacy, email hello@northlightstudies.com. Northlight Studies may need to ask for information to confirm your identity before acting on a request. Because the website does not ask visitors to identify themselves, it is generally not possible to connect technical information such as an IP address to a particular person.

You also have the right to lodge a complaint with the Norwegian Data Protection Authority, Datatilsynet.

Children’s privacy

Northlight Studies publishes material for teachers that may be used in school settings, but the website is not directed at children and is not designed to collect personal information from them. Northlight Studies does not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has sent personal information through the contact form or by email, please get in touch so that it can be deleted.

Changes to this policy

This policy may be updated when Northlight Studies changes its website, introduces new services, or changes the technologies it uses. The date at the top of this page shows when it was last updated.
